Animal Care Volunteer - Cosley Zoo - Seasonal

Department: Cosley Zoo
Location: Wheaton, IL

Deadline: Open until filled

General Purpose:

A position working directly with the zookeepers to provide support for the daily care of the animals and their exhibits at Cosley Zoo. This is an unpaid position requiring a minimum of one 4 hour shift per week for no less than 9 months. Hours and days are assigned on a first come first served basis and are conditional on the program needs.

Qualifications

Minimum 18 years of age and high school graduate. Animal and people experience considered a plus.

Essential Duties

  1. Assist zookeeper staff with routine feeding, cleaning and general husbandry for domestic and wild animals. This will comprise 90% of the duties.

  2. Assist zookeeper staff with reporting, repairs and maintenance needs of enclosures, equipment and grounds.

  3. Communicate openly with assigned staff to allow for a more well-rounded experience.

  4. Interact with the public offering education, information, assistance, or control when necessary.

  5. Must follow, administer and implement Cosley Zoo and Wheaton Park District policies and guidelines set forth in the Volunteer Handbook.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist with fund-raisers and special events if interested.
  2. Attend staff meetings or other special meetings if applicable.
  3. Participate in the observation of animals for medical, research, or interaction purposes.

Psychological Considerations

May feel stress while dealing with dangerous animals or difficult members of the public.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds up to 20 yards. Stand, climb, bend and stoop for long periods of time. Must be able to tolerate odors, dust, and animal feces.

Cognitive and Safety Considerations

Must be able to follow directions and demonstrate good safety awareness and judgment.
