Zookeeper - Part Time

Department: Cosley Zoo
Location: Wheaton, IL

Open until filled

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the welfare of collection animals and maintenance of their enclosures.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Minimum of a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry, biology, zoology, or related field. Equivalent training and experience in zoos or other animal care facility considered. Experience with an AZA accredited zoo preferred. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word. Must have great analytical, organizational, interpersonal; and written and verbal communication skills. Must be comfortable handling domestic animals and native wildlife.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Effectively use all available materials, supplies, and equipment.
  2. Perform scheduled routine feeding, cleaning, and general husbandry for domestic and wild animals.
  3. Work effectively as a team member in all animal areas.
  4. Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
  5. Oversee animal related tasks and areas as assigned.
  6. Maintain inventory of animal-related supplies as assigned.
  7. Monitor health and behavior of animal collection and communicate changes to supervisor in a timely manner.
  8. Oversee administration of medications, restraint, or transport as assigned.
  9. Report repairs and maintenance needs for enclosures, equipment, and grounds promptly.
  10. Participate in behavioral husbandry programs for enrichment, training, and behavioral analysis.
  11. Assist with special events, fund-raisers, and educational programs as assigned.
  12. Operate zoo equipment such as zoo skid-steer tractor and truck efficiently and safely.
  13. Interact courteously with public to provide education, information, assistance, and control to enforce the policies and procedures of the district and zoo.
  14. Submit and maintain accurate written records and reports including enrichment evaluations, training logs, and daily reports.
  15. Monitor and control water quality in water features.
  16. Facilitate animal care volunteer and intern training and mentorship as assigned.
  17. Assist with ex situ and in situ conservation projects as assigned.
  18. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC

Must have and maintain: a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record, CPR/AED certified or obtain within one (1) year of employment, and current Mandatory Reporter certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: frequently move throughout the buildings and the zoo and on uneven ground; occasionally and repetitively use a keyboard; occasionally move objects such as feed bags, animals, etc. weighing up to 50 lbs. and over 50 lbs. with assistance; occasionally position self to move objects below waist or above head; and frequently communicate with staff, volunteers, interns, etc. Frequently handle various mammals, reptiles, birds, etc. safely.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: continuously tolerate all weather conditions and insects, exposure to pesticides, chemicals, fumes, gasses, odors, dust, mold, animal hair/dander/feces and mud, and frequently to wet, slippery surfaces including up to a few feet of water.

HOURS

Sunday through Wednesday, 28 hours/week.

Schedule consists of 3 - 8 hour shifts, and 1 - 4 hour shift during workweek.

SALARY

Starting pay is $20.24 - $25.30, DOQ

SALARY RANGE

Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum

$20.24 - $25.30 - $30.35
