Camp Counselor Cosley Zoo - Seasonal

Department: Cosley Zoo
Location: Wheaton, IL

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the organization, instruction, and evaluation of camp programs designed for children age 4 – 15. Some instruction is in the classroom. Must engage learning through hands-on activities involving animals at Cosley Zoo.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Minimum of one (1) year of college preferred in the field of science, education, animal husbandry, or one (1) year of experience in outdoor education. Must have great organizational, interpersonal; and written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to provide effectively for persons with special needs; must be comfortable handling domestic animals and captive wildlife. Must also have good problem solving abilities, be flexible, and creative.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Organize, instruct, and evaluate all aspects of daily camp activities.
  2. Supervise program participants.
  3. Enforce rules and regulations with the participants.
  4. Maintain an inventory of supplies.
  5. Maintain daily attendance records.
  6. Participate in planned activities.
  7. Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures.
  8. Follow all animal handling protocols.
  9. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC

Must have and maintain: animal handling certification for all animals used in programs, and current Mandatory Reporter certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: frequently move around the facility on uneven ground. This position will occasionally ascend/descend stairs and position one’s self while participating in planned activities; and frequently move items such as supplies, etc. weighing up to 25 lbs. and over 25 lbs. with assistance.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: be occasionally exposed to all weather conditions, fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, pesticides, chemicals, move over wet surfaces, and mud; and frequently be exposed to animal hair/dander/feces and biting and stinging insects and bugs.

HOURS

8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, additional hours may be required for training

Starting June 9, 2025 through August 8, 2025

SALARY

$16.00 per hour
