GENERAL PURPOSE
Offer students working toward a degree in turf management hands on experience in directing a crew on golf course maintenance projects; work alongside the crew to learn the maintenance of tees, greens, fairways, driving range, cart paths, parking lots, and the use, repair and maintenance of motorized and other mechanical equipment used in golf course maintenance and repair. This internship will also allow the intern to experience other responsibilities associated with the position of Assistant Superintendent and assist the Superintendent of Golf Maintenance with various tasks and projects. This internship is from Mid-March to the end of August.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in turf management or related field; or attending school in turf management or related field required, with two years’ experience in golf course operation preferred. Working knowledge of the golf course maintenance practices. Understanding of characteristics and use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicide control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls. Must obtain Illinois Pesticide Operators License within 30 days from beginning of internship. Must have good organization, verbal, and written communication skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.
Must have and maintain: valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmission.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position must be able to work long hours with frequent periods of moving throughout the Pro Shop. Must be able to frequently move items weighing at least 25 lbs. and up to 50 lbs. The position must be able to move items weighing over 50 lbs. with assistance. This position will have frequent repetitive hand/arm movements such as when working with equipment or computers. Must be able to bend, twist, and swing a golf club while giving instructions.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to chemicals, insects, exhaust fumes, poisonous plants; potential toxic items; grease and oil; moving mechanical parts; and occasional vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme weather conditions and insects; loud noise levels of running equipment; and slippery surfaces.

$15.00 - $20.00 per hour DOQ

40 hours per week
Monday-Thursday-5am-1pm
Friday-5am-9am
Saturday or Sunday-5am-9am
