GENERAL PURPOSE
Offer students working toward a degree in turf management hands on experience in directing a crew on golf course maintenance projects; work alongside the crew to learn the maintenance of tees, greens, fairways, driving range, cart paths, parking lots, and the use, repair and maintenance of motorized and other mechanical equipment used in golf course maintenance and repair. This internship will also allow the intern to experience other responsibilities associated with the position of Assistant Superintendent and assist the Superintendent of Golf Maintenance with various tasks and projects. This internship is from Mid-March to the end of August.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in turf management or related field; or attending school in turf management or related field required, with two years’ experience in golf course operation preferred. Working knowledge of the golf course maintenance practices. Understanding of characteristics and use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicide control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls. Must obtain Illinois Pesticide Operators License within 30 days from beginning of internship. Must have good organization, verbal, and written communication skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Attendance at work site required 6 days/week.
2. Effectively use and supervise all available human resources, materials, supplies and equipment.
3. Assist in planning and supervising maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways; schedules work and supervises employees and use of equipment.
4. Assist in pesticide application and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; assists and participates in operation and maintenance of pumps, and in maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
5. Assist Superintendent with staff hiring, staff orientation, personnel management, and employee discipline and staff performance evaluations; may modify daily work schedule.
6. Assist with documentation of gas/diesel and chemical logs.
7. Understand and identifies turf diseases and insect pests.
8. Assist mechanic with equipment renovation.
9. Learn and demonstrate knowledge of horticultural and arboricultural techniques.
10. Learn how to operate all equipment/vehicles to maintain course.
11. Assist in irrigation repairs as needed.
12. Acts as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent in his/her absence.
13. Assists in coordinating, implementing, and documenting in-service training regarding safety, equipment operation, and standard district and facility risk management/loss control maintenance practices.
14. Maintains timely two-way verbal and written communication with immediate supervisor and Arrowhead Golf Club staff.
15. Motivates staff to improve work performance and minimize staff turnover and absenteeism.
16. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.
17. Follow the Wheaton Park District and Arrowhead policies, procedures, and guidelines.
18. Contribute to a feedback rich environment.
19. Proactively support the V.A.L.U.E.S. (integrity, fun, commitment, adaptability and growth, kindness, and service) on a daily basis.
20. Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assists in equipment specification and bid preparation.
2. Understands the rules and game of golf.
3. Attends staff meetings.
4. Attends in-service training.
5. Assists the Building Engineer upon request as schedule allows.
6. Assists and facilitates snow and ice removal.
7. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.
Must have and maintain: valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Must be able to operate vehicles with manual transmission.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: continuously move over uneven ground, occasionally position one’s self to move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and over 50 lbs. with assistance, perform maintenance, repairs and projects with vibrating equipment; occasionally long periods of standing (2-3 hours); occasionally access remote natural areas. Must be able to work long hours during peak season.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to chemicals, insects, exhaust fumes, poisonous plants; potential toxic items; grease and oil; moving mechanical parts; and occasional vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme weather conditions and insects; loud noise levels of running equipment; and slippery surfaces.

Monday-Thursday-5am-1pm
Friday-5am-9am
Saturday or Sunday-5am-9am
SALARY
$15.00 per hour
