Athletic Field Maintenance - Seasonal

Department: Parks and Planning
Location: Wheaton, IL

Open until filled

GENERAL PURPOSE

Responsible for a wide variety of athletic field maintenance tasks and setups at park district parks and facilities.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Minimum eighteen (18) years of age. Must have good communication and time management skills and be able to work calmly and effectively under pressure.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Attendance at work site as scheduled; must be available to work other shifts and overtime as required. Must be available to be reassigned to another division if needed.
  2. Perform daily ballfield grooming, including raking, scarifying, dragging, and chalking.
  3. Operate vehicles, utility vehicles, tractors, field grooming machines, small engine equipment, power tools, and hand tools. Training provided if needed.
  4. Assist with proper layout of all fields including ballfield preps, and sports field creation and painting.
  5. Weed, edge fields as needed.
  6. Assess and verify base measurements and pitching mound criteria each day.
  7. Assist with drying and maintaining fields following rain events, including removing standing water, raking and adding drying amendments as needed for playability.
  8. Collect garbage and maintain park district facilities.
  9. Perform inspections on soccer goals and other site amenities as assigned.
  10. Perform athletic field painting, including soccer fields, football, lacrosse, and foul lines.
  11. Assist with sports turf program by mowing, line trimming, aerating, seeding, fertilizing, and performing turf repairs.
  12. Assist and perform irrigation tasks, including operation of water wheels and moisture monitoring of turf and infields.
  13. May be required to work Athletics department special events.
  14. Wear personal protective equipment for job function when needed.
  15. Maintain effective two-way communication while dealing with concerns in the field with all district staff and immediate supervisor.
  16. Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.

Must have and maintain: valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: continuously walk/move and position one’s self to perform maintenance; occasionally climb stairs/ladder, repetitive use of hands/arms, vibration and grasping while working with tools and equipment, and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs, and over with assistance, eye/hand coordination, and fine manipulation; occasionally walk on uneven ground. Must be able to drive a tractor.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: handle all weather conditions while traveling between facilities, frequently encounter rain, snow, insects, dirt, poisonous plants, grease, oil, mud; occasional confined spaces, heights over 12 feet, fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, animal hair, dander, feces, noise over 85 dbls, wet, slippery floors and surfaces; rarely encounter pesticides, chemicals and smoke.

HOURS

Standard hours are: Monday - Friday - 7:00am-3:00pm. Preference to candidates who are available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as-needed

SALARY

$16.00 - $18.00 per hour DOQ

SALARY RANGE

Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum

$15.00 - $18.75 - $22.50
